Learners Permit

FIRST STAGE INSTRUCTIONAL PERMIT
CAN	At 15 years of age Enroll in Private Drivers Ed

RESTRICTIONS
Good for 6 months Allowed 2 within 2-yr period Must drive with a LICENSED DRIVER at least 21 years of age + 3 years of driving experience Specific Traffic Violations could extend the Instructional Period.

SECOND STAGE PROVISIONAL LICENSE
At 15 1/2 years of age Have NM State Permit or ID Card

For Your Information

New Mexico's new drivers' licenses (DLs) and identification cards (IDs) are being introduced in a regionally phased implementation, beginning in April and scheduled for completion in June, 2008. The new cards are centrally issued at a single, secure manufacturing facility, then mailed to the cardholder, who will generally receive the new DL or ID 7-10 days after the date of application. At time of application at a New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) field office, the customer receives a temporary / extension card and is advised to carry his or her prior card (which is returned to the customer with a hole punched in it) with the temporary / extension document as back-up identification.

WHO IS EXEMPT
MILITARY	Nonresidents in the military who are stated at a NM base & maintain residency in their HOME state. Registration must be current.
STUDENT	Students from out of state attending a NM university & who own a vehicle registered in their HOME state. A "valid nonresident" decal from the school should be affixed on the vehicle.

Utility & trailers weighing less than 6000 lbs. may be registered permanently. Call for details.

IN BERNALILLO COUNTY ONLY: If the Vehicle is a 1975 or newer model, you must bring a current emissions certificate in addition to the requirements listed. Diesel models are exempt.
