Once you purchase a used vehicle in New Mexico, you have 30 days to complete the titling and registration process. For those used vehicles purchased outside of New Mexico, you have up to 90 days. DEALERSHIP OR PRIVATE OWNER USED TITLE TRANSFERS
You might have either purchased or were gifted a used car from a dealership or private party. Although the documentation required to title the used vehicle will be the same, there are a few differences to note with respect to each:
Dealership Transfers
The 3% title excise taxes are charged based on Price Paid that is provided from the dealership. If your vehicle is being financed, the financial institution or lien holder will retain the title until the loan is paid off in full.
Private Party Transfers
The 3% title excise taxes are charged based on the National Automobile Dealership Association listings. If you purchased your vehicle below its listing price on the NADA website, you will still be charged the excise tax on the NADA listing price.
Gift Transfers
Vehicles received as a gift will require an “Affidavit of Gift of Motor Vehicle or Boat, MVD form 10018. This affidavit must be original and contain notarized signatures from both parties.
