Travel safely this winter.

Unfortunately, accidents don’t send you a handwritten letter before they arrive (although it would be really nice if they did). They are most often unexpected events that you have no control over…but can seriously derail your plans or cause a potentially life-threatening situation. Even though you might not be able to prevent these accidents from happening, you can always be prepared for them. In case you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere or without access to immediate help in the middle of winter, we’ve put together a checklist to help you prepare.

The Checklist

The winter months in New Mexico are a time of varying weather and road conditions. One wrong turn can lead to a disaster that causes you to camp out in your car overnight. When you want to be prepared for anything, use this checklist:

For personal safety and survival and to stay warm, hydrated and fed:

  1. One gallon of drinking water, per person
  2. Food that can be easily prepared without any equipment, like granola bars
  3. Can opener
  4. Enough prescription medication for 5 days
  5. A first aid kit
  6. Flashlight and batteries
  7. Cell phone and portable charger
  8. Extra warm clothes, including scarves and mittens
  9. Extra blankets
  10. Compass
  11. Cash
  12. Matches or lighter

And for car maintenance and repair:

  1. Shovel
  2. Windshield scraper
  3. Jumper cables
  4. Flares
  5. Roadmap
  6. Battery powered radio

And optional items, but good to have:

  1. Rock salt
  2. Lantern
  3. Ice pick
  4. Tire chains and rope
  5. Paper plates and utensils
  6. Towels

This list is a good start to an emergency checklist, but is not all-inclusive. You can customize these items to ensure you have the right amounts for your needs.
