State law requires you to carry car insurance.

Every automobile is required to be covered under an automobile insurance plan in order to maintain safer roads. But there are so many plans and options available to you that it can seem difficult to choose the best one.

Selecting a Plan the Fits Your Needs

Currently, New Mexico requires each automobile to carry $25,000 for bodily injury, $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people, and $10,000 for property damage. From there, you are able to select different options for a wider net of coverage. When you are selecting a plan, consider:

• • How much coverage you need. In addition to the minimum, consider variables like the value of the car you drive and what you will be using your vehicle for. The more expensive the car and the more you drive it, the higher you’ll want your coverage to be.
  • The different options available. You can get the minimum required coverage in New Mexico, or you can add-on extras. You have the option of selecting personal injury protection which covers you and any passengers in case of injury, uninsured/underinsured motorist that helps take care of costs in case the other driver is not carrying/does not have enough coverage or comprehensive coverage that takes care of any costs, should your car be stolen or damaged.
  • Your driving record. Have you had tickets or been in an accident in the last three years? The way you drive might indicate the level of coverage you’ll want before driving.
  • The different quotes given to you. Every insurance company calculates their quotes a certain way. Some might use your credit report, others base the number off your driving history. Compare the same level of coverage between carriers.
  • The company behind the quote. No two insurance companies are the same. Call them, and get a feel for how they operate and treat their customers.

Always review the policy before you sign to ensure you understand every aspect of the contract up-front. Doing so will help you to feel comfortable with the policy you are agreeing to and to know what is and is not covered by your plan.
