Luckily for New Mexico residents, the state provides a 30-day grace period on expired driver’s licenses giving you extra time to get them renewed. But keep in mind that driving one day past the grace period could result in a misdemeanor for driving without a valid license. How to Renew a New Mexico Driver’s License
The best way to avoid an expired license is to renew it early! You can renew your New Mexico driver’s license up to 90 days before its expiration date. If your driver’s license has been expired for five years or more, you will need to retake the written driver’s test passing with a 70% or above.

- Two proofs of your current address
- The expired driver’s license

Starting May 3, 2023, you will need a REAL ID, a current passport, or another federally approved form of identification to do the following:
- Board a plane
- Enter a military base
- Enter certain government buildings
- Visit a nuclear facility
