Replacing Your New Mexico Driver’s License
If your driver’s license was stolen, then you will first need to report the event to your local police. Doing so will alert your local police of potential identity theft in the area, and obtaining a copy of the police report will allow you to obtain a replacement license with a different New Mexico license number.
Since the rollout of the Real ID Act, replacing a lost driver’s license requires presenting the same documents you would need to get a brand-new license. You also get the choice (until about 2020) if you want to replace the same type of license you lost (that is, a Standard Driver’s License or a Real ID-compliant license.
For both license a Real ID-Compliant license, you need to provide:
- One (1) proof of identity and age (birth certificate)
- One (1) proof of identification number (SSN)
- Two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency
For a Standard Driver’s License, you need to provide:
- One (1) proof of identity and age (birth certificate)
- Two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency

Driver’s License Replacement
If you need to replace your New Mexico driver’s license, there are two main types of driver licenses you can apply for: a REAL ID driver’s license or a Standard Driver’s License. A REAL ID license card can be used to board an aircraft or to enter a federal facility where an ID is required. A Standard Driver’s License, which is not in accordance with the Federal Act, can be used strictly as an identification card and driver’s license.
