A Letter from the Parent of a New Driver

My Dearest Child,

Freedom.

From your point of view, you’re getting the freedom of the road. The wind running through your hair while you drive down the highway. We know that for you, this is probably one of the most exciting times of your life. We’re happy for you. Really, we are…

But from our point of view, your freedom is so scary that we may never get in a car again. Ever. Cross our hearts. Because with all that freedom comes certain death.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But come on, seriously? You’ve run that red light on Menaul and Wyoming pretty much every time we’ve driven home. You forget your turn signal. You ignore speed limits. Remember last week when we were on I-40? Yeah, we’re pretty sure that officer who pulled you over remembers your cries for mercy.

If we have to tell you that you’re going to kill us one more time, we promise you that you’ll never see the driver’s seat again.
