“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.” —Fred Rogers
Over the past week, our country has been hit hard with two major tragedies that have been put in the national spotlight: the Boston Marathon and the explosion in West, Texas. Throughout all of the chaos and shock, the first people to respond are always the ones capable of rendering first-aid to those who are in need of help, of saving more lives and of comforting those who are trying to piece together what happened. This Thursday, we’d like to take a few minutes to thank our first responders for being able to keep calm and give help where it is needed. These are the people running towards the chaos instead of running away.
Coming Together
These tragedies have brought us closer together as a nation and as a New Mexican community. In the last few days, we’ve seen events scheduled locally and nationally to benefit the victims in Boston. Even though we’re half a country away, we still feel a connection to the people in Boston and have an impulse to help. Continuing to band together makes us stronger than ever, let’s all find a way to help.
