Buy Summer Gear

All experienced motorcyclists should know that protective gear is important when riding a motorcycle. That being said, if you’re used to riding during some of the colder months of the year, the gear for summer may look a little different. While it’s important to wear protective clothing, you don’t want to wear heavy layers that could lead to heat exhaustion. Luckily, many companies make motorcycle jackets, pants, gloves, and other clothing that are designed for summer. These clothes will provide you with the protection you need without making you feel like you’re sitting in an oven while you’re riding. Make sure to do your research and buy any necessary gear before you leave!

Remain Visible

Visibility is key when you’re riding a motorcycle. Due to the smaller size of motorcycles compared to other vehicles on the road, other drivers may have a hard time seeing a motorcycle until it’s too late. When you’re on the road, make sure you keep plenty of space between you and other vehicles. You should also never assume that other drivers can see you, so make sure you know how to drive safely and defensively, especially on multi-lane highways. If you’re worried about being seen, especially if you’re driving in the evening, consider putting reflective tape on your clothes to increase the chances of other drivers seeing you.

Make Frequent Stops

Summer may be one of the best times to ride your motorcycle, but it doesn’t come without its risks. Some of the biggest risks of riding your motorcycle during the summer include heat exhaustion and dehydration. Both dehydration and heat exhaustion can make it harder for you to pay attention to the road and drive defensively, and the last thing you want is to get into an accident because you weren’t drinking enough water.

To help combat these risks, consider making frequent stops during the day so that you can get out of the sun and drink some water. It also might be a good idea to invest in cup holders and insulated water bottles so that you have a source of water while you’re on the road.

If you’re feeling anxious to get to your destination, and you don’t want to make frequent stops, consider traveling during the coolest parts of the day. You can start driving early in the morning, stop for the hottest part of the afternoon to enjoy lunch and some activities, and then keep driving in the evening. It may not be ideal, but it could help you avoid the heat without slowing your trip down too much.

Prepare for Passengers

While some people may prefer to travel alone, others may want to ride with a passenger so you can both enjoy everything New Mexico has to offer. Riding with a passenger can be a fun experience, but it’s vital that you’re prepared. Before you go on your trip, make sure you have an extra helmet, riding gear, water bottle, and more. If your passenger has never ridden with you before, it may be a good idea to go out on a few smaller rides to make sure they feel comfortable with how your bike moves.
