Vehicle Registration

To legally use a motor vehicle in the state of New Mexico, maintaining an up-to-date vehicle registration should be your top priority. A legally registered motor vehicle shows that you are the owner of said vehicle and are a contributing taxpayer. Failing to keep your vehicle’s registration up to date can result in a small fine if not remediated within the given timeline.

According to the MVD, “if you are less than 31 days late in renewing your vehicle registration, you must pay a $10.00 penalty, along with the cost of your registration renewal fee.” This penalty can become even more severe if you are late on renewing your vehicle registration by more than 31 days. In fact, you can expect to pay “a penalty equal to 75% of the registration fee. This penalty is added to the cost of your registration renewal fee.” For this reason, we suggest scheduling an appointment with MVD Express to renew your vehicle’s registration both quickly and easily. Below, you will find the required documents that must be presented in order to renew your vehicle’s registration. However, if you are a new resident of New Mexico, you will be required to present several additional pieces of information not listed below.

What You Will Need for Registration Renewal

  • A passed emissions test
  • A valid ID matching the name listed on your title
  • Two verifiable proofs of your physical address in New Mexico
  • Proof of an active insurance policy
  • Proof of a completed VIN inspection
  • A vehicle title or the information of your lienholder

Driving Tests

One of the biggest days of a teenager’s life is the day that they complete their driving test and receive their Real ID driver’s license. However, before that day comes, individuals must first complete a written knowledge exam and fulfill a number of prerequisites before receiving an instructional permit. Once the specified requirements have been met, and you have successfully held an instructional permit for six months without receiving any traffic violations, an individual may begin to receive their provisional license and then schedule their road test with MVD Express.

Unfortunately, at traditional MVD locations, it is not uncommon to have to wait anywhere from six to eight weeks before completing your road test. This may seem like an eternity for a teenager, but fortunately, MVD Express is here to help you complete your driver’s test as quickly as possible. We work hard to ensure that you will be seen the same day that you schedule your road test, so that you won’t have to spend weeks waiting to receive your driver’s license. This is just one of the ways that we are able to add considerable value to our already stellar customer service.

What You Will Need for Your Instructional Permit

  • Proof of driver education program completion or proof of current enrollment
  • Two proofs of identity
  • Two proofs of residency in New Mexico

Real ID Driver’s Licenses

Beginning in 2005, the Real ID Act was implemented to further establish one’s identity as a means to further secure our country. While not every state is Real ID compliant, it will be a required form of identification nationwide by October 2021. Real IDs are also useful to individuals who fly often and do not possess a passport, as it will soon be a requirement to have a Real ID to board an aircraft or enter a federal facility.

You may be wondering how to obtain a Real ID, and luckily, you are not alone. The documentation needed to receive a Real ID is extensive, and as such, we have listed the necessary credentials needed on our website. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the process of receiving a Real ID, simply get in touch with our team of friendly professionals to learn more.

Are You A New Resident of New Mexico?

If you are new to the Land of Enchantment, you may not know where to begin when it comes time to update your address, apply for a new ID card, or update your vehicle registration. We know that relocating to a new state can be incredibly hectic, which is why we are here to help guide you throughout every step of the process. When compared to other surrounding states, the requirements for obtaining a New Mexico driver’s license are fairly straightforward. However, there are some minor caveats to keep in mind when applying for a Real ID Driver’s License. Failing to do so could create undue stress on your behalf, resulting in you having to make multiple trips to one of our locations.

For example, it is a state requirement that all drivers complete the “None for the Road” program before receiving their driver’s license. This course can be completed at home by watching informative videos online, and is designed to educate individuals about the importance of DWI prevention and awareness. While this program can be completed in a short period of time, many new residents of New Mexico are unaware that the program exists, and fail to complete it before arriving at the Motor Vehicle Department. For your convenience, we have listed all of the necessary items to have in your possession when applying for your Real ID driver’s license.

What You Will Need To Receive Your New Mexico Driver’s License

  • Your original birth certificate
  • Your Social Security Card
  • Two proofs of your physical address
  • Your current driver’s license
  • “None for the Road” proof of completion
