What Is REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act of 2005 establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards. REAL ID is a federal law, and it affects how states, like New Mexico, issue driver’s licenses and ID cards, and without a REAL ID, after May 3, 2023, you will not be able to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a military installation or federal facility that requires ID.

All New Mexico driver’s licenses and ID cards that bear a gold star, issued after November 14, 2016, are REAL ID compliant.
