It’s extremely exciting to pass your driver’s test and finally take to the open road without needing an adult in the front seat watching your every move. However, the process leading up to your driver’s test can be stressful. In part one of this series, we provided you with a few tips that you should keep in mind as you prepare to take your exam. As we continue part two, we will give you a few more tips so that you feel ready and confident when taking your test.

When it’s time to take your exam, waiting hours for your turn behind the wheel may only add to your nerves and stress. Luckily, at MVD Express, we give you the option of scheduling your appointment in advance, eliminating the wait so that you can walk in, take your exam, and pass with flying colors! If you’re ready to take your driver’s or permit test, then stop by one of MVD Express’ locations in New Mexico or schedule an appointment online!

Ask Questions

During your driving test, you want to portray to the examiner that you know exactly what you are doing, even if your nerves get the best of you. However, many people get so set in that mindset that they don’t ask questions when they really should. Don’t be afraid to ask your examiner any questions while you’re taking your test, especially if you’re unclear about what they are asking you to do. The worst your examiner could do is say that they can’t tell you, and failing to ask at all may lead to mistakes that will prevent you from getting your license on the very first try.

Don’t Forget the Basics

Driving safely is the most important part of taking your driver’s test, but there are a lot of little details that contribute to that goal. Many times, young drivers will get behind the wheel for their test and be so focused on using their turn signals, buckling their seat belt, and parallel parking perfectly that they may forget about all of the basics. Keep in mind that basic steps like checking your mirrors, buckling your seatbelt, and checking behind and beside your vehicle when switching lanes also play a part in whether or not you will pass.

Make Sure You Understand Your Vehicle

As a young driver, there’s a good chance that you have driven a few different cars to help you get practice behind the wheel. At the very least, you probably drove one of your parents’ cars, as well as the car used during your behind-the-wheel portion of driver’s ed.

When you go to take your driver’s test, make sure you feel comfortable driving whatever vehicle you use to take the exam. Your driver’s test is not the place to show up in a brand new vehicle that you have maybe driven once or twice. If you are not familiar with the vehicle, you may be asked questions during your exam that you may not know the answer to, such as how to apply or release the parking brake or going in reverse with or without a backup camera.
